Making the Most Out of Your Interior Design Styles

As with any home, each room should have a design that’s carefully planned. Each room has its unique purpose to serve, and is why there are no standard templates that could – or should be used in designing all spaces in uniformity.

What interior design styles should you take note of in planning your living spaces?

Before anything else, consider function

The usual interior design styles for room designs vary according to the space’s intended purpose. While there is no set rule in terms of color, material, and textures to be used, it is important that you provide good value and use on the actual space that you have. This means you need to carefully plan on the furniture and appliances that you want to be present in the space. Consider the size and positioning to ensure that it will be both useful and stylish without compromising on your ability to walk around them.

After all, what good is a beautiful room if you can’t even move around and enjoy it?

Prioritize safety.

Your home should be family-friendly and be ultimately safe for everybody. This part must not be neglected when you’re planning interior design styles for your living spaces.

Rounded counters and furniture help prevent major injuries. You should also consider proper measures in stowing and installing electrical appliances. This means that you should avoid cluttered sockets and cables to prevent possible sparks that may cause fires. It is important to note that your chosen design style does note equate to a fire hazard (allowing for sockets to be extra close to fabrics such as curtains and upholstery).

Each home should be equipped with a fire extinguisher to help avoid disasters. Make sure you know how to use it even before a fire takes place. When that happens, every moment is precious and you don’t want to waste time reading directions on the extinguisher.

Set up proper ventilation.

The saying “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen” doesn’t just apply to an actual kitchen. Ventilation is a vital part of any home, without proper ventilation, everyone at home can risk suffocation and carbon monoxide poisoning. Likewise, stale indoor air can cause damage to furniture, walls, floors, and clothing as it encourages mold and mildew growth.

There are several types of ventilation available for your home:

  • Natural Ventilation – this mostly involves the chimney and your windows. However, it is important to note that relying on natural ventilation should factor in the number and size of the windows, as well as its constant times of opening and closing to ensure air flow.

  • Mechanical Ventilation – there are several types that include supply only (only provides ingress of fresh air), exhaust only (only expels indoor air), and balanced types that is able to regulate both air inflow and exhaust.

  • No Ventilation – While this one in particular sounds like it’s meant to trap the air inside, it is actually the most common choice among most homes. This only works well in homes that are not insulated and are relying on “leaks” around the structure to let outdoor air in and indoor air out. However, if you are situated in an area that commonly experiences drops in temperature, this is not a wise choice to make.

Should you be unsure about the choice to make and opt for one type initially, you can always remove and replace your current ventilation type to make way for a better one in the future.
